Our reading lists

In addition to a good guide book, there is a wide range of reading that can enhance any travels: history, travel writing, fiction set in the destination, letters or diaries, even historical guide books.  We anthologise some of these sources in our Blue Guide Literary Companion series (to Venice, Rome and London) in handy small volumes, and also have some of our own reading recommendations in Blue Guides:

- Florence and Tuscany;

- Venice;

- Rome.

Booksellers with a good online travel selection

Daunt Books of London is a leading travel chain with shops that are a pleasure to visit and a comprehensive range: you can 'browse by continent' on their website.

And although the recommendations and summaries are not so detailed, waterstones.com has a travel category, with various sub-categories, and a decent range of titles in their stores.

And in the US: probably the best site of its sort anywhere is Longitude Books 'recommended reading for travelers' - well thought-out lists of intelligent travel literature and guide books organized by destination with reviews and recommendations: www.longitudebooks.com
