Beautiful Renaissance Art in S Tyrol

Detail of a painting by the South Tyrolean artist known as the Master of Uttenheim
A scene from an altarpiece by the Master of Uttenheim. Here St Augustine (in pale brown) is rapt and wide-eyed as he listens to St Ambrose preaching in Milan. Ambrose seems to have got into his stride, ticking items off on his fingers. Meanwhile two members of the audience have fallen fast asleep.

The Pustertal artists of the Renaissance

This South Tyrol valley gave birth to its school of artists in the 15th century. They generally worked in a northern Gothic style and many of them still remain anonymous. Most of their work can be seen in South Tyrol’s beautiful gothic churches, though some is to be found as far away as Vienna, Munich or Warsaw. The most famous among them is probably Michael Pacher.
