Founded in 1947, the Institute of Contemporary Arts (ICA) is a centre for contemporary art in all media, with a programme of exhibitions, a new media centre, which promotes Internet art, a programme of world cinema screenings as well as frequent talks and symposia. When conceptual art was new, the ICA was a famous venue for cutting edge, anti-establishment events and exhibitions, as well as a centre of theory and debate. While some charge it with having become too much of a social drinking club with a cinema attached, the ICA is still at the forefront of the promotion of contemporary culture, and stages the annual Becks Futures contemporary art prize. Based in a handsome house in a Nash terrace overlooking the Mall (its home since 1968), white and minimalist inside, the ICA is also known for its organic restaurant and its bar, open until 1am most weekdays. Entry to the ICA requires day membership (only £1.50 for the day, £2.50 during an exhibition). |
