The Kew Bridge Engines Trust was founded in 1973 with the aim of restoring to steam the beam engines of the Grand Junction Water Works at Kew Pumping Station, built in 1837 to provide a steady water supply for west London. Now the greatest collection of working large beam engines in the world, they, along with their listed buildings, convey a powerful impression of high Victorian technological achievement. The extensive site of this working museum, largely maintained by volunteer enthusiasts, also contains displays on the history of London’s water supply, a comprehensive collection of rotative steam, diesel and gas engines, and a short, narrow-gauge railway. |
