The Rugby Football Union was founded in 1871, as a result of an initiative by Edwin Ash, the secretary of Richmond Rugby Club, to standardise the rules of the game. A large market garden was bought at Twickenham by the RFU in 1907; initially it was known as ‘Billy Williams’s Cabbage Patch’, after the committee member who had promoted the purchase of the land in the face of fierce opposition. The museum, which opened in 1996, is a state-of-the-art piece of museum design, introduced by a reconstructed ‘line-out’, with fully interactive multimedia coverage of the history of the game, the RFU, and individual clubs and players. Mementoes include early match programmes, the Calcutta Cup, and an 1871 England jersey. The tour of the stadium includes the England dressing rooms, the players’ tunnel, Council Chamber, and Royal Box. |
