Parts of Rome are blighted by over-tourism, others offer equally spectacular sights without the crowds.  

And indeed in the central areas themselves you can find yourself alone in front of a painting by Caravaggio or an extraordinarily powerful 2,000 year old Roman sculpture.  But not always easy to find or even be aware of.
