1 review for Blue Guide Lombardy, Milan & the Italian Lakes

  1. Gloria Allaire, Emerita Professor of Italian

As a grad student many years ago, I used your Blue Guide to Florence. I learned so much from it that later I constantly recommended it to my students who were planning Study Abroad in Florence. Recently, this retired professor of Italian enjoyed a two-week stay in Milan, a city mostly unknown to me. I carried your much improved and extensively detailed Lombardy, Milan & the Italian Lakes guide book with me every day, everywhere, and found it to be the most helpful guide for the intelligent adult traveller of any on the market today. (I really do not care to know the best bars, dance clubs or where to rent a jet ski, thank you very much!)

Any Blue Guide should be required reading BEFORE embarking on one’s travel adventure. One can browse details about the various cities, monuments, churches, etc. in advance and decide which to visit and approximately how long to spend in a location. During the trip, one should refer to it diligently when visiting particular sites. The book itself is a bit heavy, but the sturdy cover and paper will ensure its durability for more than one trip.

The “Milan” section was so helpful, including maps of the city, indications of Metro lines and stops, even floor plans of specific castles, museums, and churches. I spent an entire week there (with no previous in-depth experience of the city) before I went to the actual tourist office to ask for a bit of information. The guide’s lucid prose clued me into things I probably would have overlooked such as the delightful Navigli area, the unique architecture and interior design of the Villa Necchi Campiglio, the exquisite Portinari Chapel, the art nouveau aquarium, … the list goes on. Descriptions provide basic logistical details, phone numbers, and official websites plus just enough historical background or commentary on art and architecture that − without having to do extensive reading or research − the traveller can appreciate each sight to a degree that exceeds the usual tourist blogger’s “here’s another church” sort of comments.

This is such an ideal guide book! The only improvement I can think of would be to include a few blank pages for “Notes” at the rear. I was scribbling personal observations all over in the margins as I went along.

Thank you for allowing me to share my most happy experience using your Lombardy, Milan guide.
